Important Dates

Academic Calendar: Determine when class starts, ends, and the holidays in between.
Drop Deadline: Students may drop classes until the end of the 3rd week of class. (You may want to adjust your syllabus accordingly.)
Finals Schedule: Check for your finals group here. If you are not going to give a final, let your students know on the first day. (They may be able to add another class in the the same finals group.)
Grade submission:Grades are due 5 days after the last class or final. Please confer with Professor Sidhu regarding grade submission. Your GSI can also submit grades electronically.
Instructor evaluations: Standardized instructor evaluation forms are provided to hand out sometime during the last two weeks of class. The forms are to be collected and turned in by a student volunteer on the same day.

Class Logistics and Policies

Class size: For real-time enrollment information, search for your class on the Online Schedule of Classes, then click on the "Click here for current enrollment information." If your class is oversubscribed by more than 10%, please contact the CET office to discuss expanding class size.
Waiting list: CET classes are often oversubscribed, but students on the waitlist cannot enroll unless enough students who are officially enrolled, drop. Instructors can request that certain students be proactively dropped (e.g. if they don't attend initial classes) by contacting Marcia Hickman for E classes or Anayancy Paz for IEOR classes, and copying Director Sidhu. If there is sufficient space in the class, the Tele-BEARS enrollment system will automatically add students off the waitlist.
Unofficial Waitlist: If your class is extremely oversubscribed, you may be approached by students who could not add their names to the wait list. Your option is to follow the procedures above to free up space, or you can make exceptions in extraordinary cases by contacting Marcia Hickman for E classes or Anayancy Paz for IEOR classes, and copying Director Sidhu. For example, Concurrent Enrollment students include students enrolled part-time or concurrently with other universities. Because of this, they cannot enroll electronically until the registration system officially recognizes them (often well after the drop deadline).
Student Instructors: Depending on your course enrollment, you may be assigned a Graduate Student Researcher (GSR), a Graduate Student Instructor (GSI), and/or a Reader to assist you with both administrative and instructional aspects of your class. S/he will likely have greater access to the University's administrative systems and typically assists with grading, copying and checking out university materials. If you have a particular student or requirements in mind, CET can work with the appropriate department to hire someone who meets your needs. Also, the CET hires students on a part-time basis to assist with CET programs and classes. Please let us know if one of these students could be of assistance.
Class roster:You can get a copy of the class roster with or without pictures through CourseWeb. If you do not have a CalNet ID, you can request a roster from your GSI, or by contacting Marcia Hickman for E classes or Anayancy Paz for IEOR classes, and copying Director Sidhu.
Classroom selection:CET will request a classroom for you equipped with a projector based on expected enrollment. If you have other requirements, such as stadium-style seating, please let Susan Broderick know as early as possible.
Grading policies: Grading policies are at the discretion of the instructor, but should be announced on the first day of class. Most upper-division undergraduate classes are graded on a B- curve.
Grade Changes: Basically, you can not change a final grade, unless it is an "Incomplete" or you made a typo (procedural error)
Office hours: You may want to hold regular office hours at the CET office to allow students to meet with you outside of class. Your GSI, if you have one, is expected to also have 2 office hours per week.
Equivalent courses: Students may not receive credit for certain CET courses if they have taken other equivalent ones. Check requirements for the CET certificate here.

Class Technology

ETS: ETS (Educational Technology Services) manages all of UC Berkeley's classroom technology needs. Once your classroom has been assigned, check its facilities. You may request a brief, on-site training session to review your classroom technology or any additional AV equipment or services.
Wireless Internet: The AirBears WLAN provides wireless Internet access to most classrooms for official students and faculty with CalNet IDs. CET can request a guest login for you to access the network for a week at a time. If you need regular Internet access for your class however, you will have to rely on your GSI or another student. You may also want to consider policies restricting students' laptop usage during class time if you want their full attention.
Webcasts/Podcasts: You may request that your lectures be Webcast or podcast. Video recordings may not be budgeted, but audio recordings are free. You and any guest lecturers will be asked to complete a media release form. Anyone can view or listen to past lectures here.
Keys: If your class has a locked media cabinet for equipment, you should check out a key from ETS for the semester. You may also check out a room key if you want early access to your classroom (and there is no preceding class in session).
Projector: CET also has an extra projector you may borrow for occasional use.
Course website: bSpace allows you to create a course website tied to your class roster and manage a large number of administrative as well as learning activities e.g., maintaining a course syllabus and schedule, communicating with students, and allowing for electronic assignment submission, as well as collaboration tools such as discussion boards, student project worksites, and online surveys. bSpace is the only administrative system that does not require a CalNet ID. You can request that ETS create a guest login and course website for you. Workshops and one-on-one support are available (although our instructors have found the software quite intuitive.)

Other Teaching Resources

Course Materials Cost:Undergraduates are very cost-sensitive, and we aim to keep the cost of textbooks, readers and other required course materials down to $50 per student. Consider linking to materials available online to keep expenses down for students without violating copyrights.
Textbooks: To arrange for students to purchase textbooks in the Cal Bookstore, they generally must be ordered 3 months in advance. Email the bookstore with the title, publisher, course #, Prof. Sidhu's name and expected enrollment to see if they can accommodate your request. If not, please use Amazon.com and readers instead.
Readers:To create a hard-copy reader (a compendium of articles), contact Copy Central. They can clear any copyright issues and sell readers to students from any of their 3 locations. Copy Central keeps on file a standard version of the CET cover (please provide text tailored to your class.) Students can access HBR articles--but not HBS cases--electronically at no cost through the library. Contact Prof. Sidhu about enabling student purchases of HBS cases online.
Library Materials:You can search for library materials online. If you have a CalNet ID, you can borrow materials during the semester and access the library's electronic databases remotely. You may have to go to the Doe Library Privileges desk with a Cal 1 card to confirm your academic status. If you are not officially appointed, your GSI can arrange to borrow materials on your behalf, or make arrangements with Prof. Sidhu. You may also put materials on reserve for your students' use.
CET Wiki: Each course and instructor should have a page on the CET wiki. For example, Lecture Series wiki page and Professor Sidhu's wiki page.
Copies: Copies can be made by your GSI in the appropriate department. If you don't have a GSI, please ask for the copy code to use the copy machine in the TLS office, 230 Bechtel.
Student Namecards: Students can use this template as to create namecards to help you learn their names.
