Our nation’s biggest health challenge today is curing the healthcare system itself. Costs continue to escalate, quality remains uneven, and the number of uninsured citizens has grown to 46 million.Only by combining the expertise of medicine and engineering can we restore our healthcare system to health. Medicine provides the practices that can prevent and treat human illness; engineering provides the technology, designs, and devices to make a complex system such as U.S. healthcare more affordable, effective, and accessible. This conference examines how new technologies, leading to new, low-cost products and services, could reduce hospital stays and give patients greater control over their own health. In the works, and discussed at this conference, are technologies that detect serious disease early, reduce drug costs, eliminate unproductive medical interventions, and allow the elderly and those with chronic disease to manage their care at home. The insights from this event will be useful to healthcare industry innovators as well as policy makers. |
