The course broadly covers patents as a business tool, and the use of intellectual capital for competitive advantage. In the course, we will discuss how to protect and commercialize engineering and scientific intellectual assets as well as examine several patent litigation case studies with a focus on invention, innovation, and patent strategy.

Attendance:
Attendance at the lecture sessions is required for a passing grade. Students will be expected to sign in for each class, as well as to submit a question during the Q&A portion of the lecture that is relevant to the session discussion topic. Student signatures will be matched to validate individual attendance. Absences for truly critical and unavoidable reasons should be arranged in advance whenever possible. One missed lecture is allowed.

Grading:
This is a 1 credit course offered pass/fail. In order to receive a passing grade, students must attend all required lectures. Absences for truly critical and unavoidable reasons should be arranged in advance whenever possible. Passing grade – requires attendance at all lectures (with one allowed absence). Students should plan to arrive 10-15 min prior to the beginning of each lecture to sign in for the class. Late students will be not be allowed to sign in, and will be considered absent. Failing grade – will be assigned to any student with two or more absences.

Dr. Tal Lavian, brings 20+ years of innovation to the high tech industry. Tal holds a Ph.D. from UC Berkeley in Computer Science & Networking with minor in Patent Law.

Speaker: Duane Valz, VP & Associate General Counsel for Global Patent Strategy at Yahoo

Duane Valz, a graduate of UCB's Boalt Hall School of Law, is VP & Associate General Counsel for Global Patent Strategy at Yahoo! In that role, he leads a team of attorneys and engineers responsible for the company's worldwide invention harvesting, patent filings, and portfolio management. Additionally, Mr. Valz advises on IP-related litigation and licensing.

Mr. Joe Beyers started HP's Intellectual Property Licensing program and is currently a 32 year veteran of HP. He was originally an electrical engineer and inventor.

Speaker: Professor Lawrence J. Udell is Executive Director of both the Center For New Venture Alliance and the California Invention Center

Professor Lawrence J. Udell has taught at Cal-State Hayward, School of Business and Economics for over 25 years. He created and teaches "New Ventures and Entrepreneurship" courses, along with a special course in "Technology Marketing." He has served as a Lecturing Professor at U.C. Berkeley teaching a course on Technology Transfer & Commercialization, in addition to other universities in the U. S. and Canada. He is an active member of the Licensing Executives Society, and is co-founder and Managing Director of the Silicon Valley Chapter of LES.
